Level descriptions:
LEVEL 1: Introductory Rear Foot Mechanics
COMMON CAUSES OF BIOMECHANICAL DYSFUNCTION Basic biomechanical principles are discussed including the Subtalar joint (STJ), what it is, where it is and how it should function. Why it does not always function as designed and the contributing factors associated with dysfunction of the STJ.
Topics include: Subtalar Joint function/dysfunction and evaluation and Gait Cycle; Common conditions associated with biomechanical dysfunction - Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Spurs, Achilles Tendonitis, Shin Splints, Knee Pain, Lower Back Pain and Leg Length Discrepancy.
Practical work includes: Hands on assessment and Neutral position of the STJ, Taping techniques, Heat moulding and fitting of Vasyli Orthosis (each delegate will receive a pair of orthotics for the practical session) Wedging and fine tuning.
LEVEL 2: Introductory Fore Foot Mechanics
ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSIS OF FOREFOOT CONDITIONS: We look at what constitutes the forefoot, the joints and the interaction between the rear foot and fore foot. How they function together during gait tconvert the foot from a mobile adapter ta rigid lever and back. Mechanics and motion of the fore foot, 1st ray function and assessment, Fore foot neutral position.
Topics include: Fore foot mechanics and 1st Ray function and evaluation; Common conditions - Bunions, Metatarsalgia, Morton's Neuroma, Hallux Rigidus/Limitus, Hammer-Claw-Mallet toes, Fore foot Varus/Valgus, Plantarflexed/Dorsiflexed 1st Ray.
Practical work includes: Hands-on assessment of the fore foot, fore foot neutral, measurement techniques, wedging and fine-tuning of orthosis, troubleshooting.
LEVEL 3: Clinical Biomechanics Toolkit
Intended tconsolidate and develop the skills presented in the level 1 and 2 seminars. A system for approaching clinical biomechanics will be proposed, highlighting the concept of the 'Clinical Biomechanics Toolkit' tplace previously developed skills in the context of the clinical encounter. Several core skills will then be developed through lecture and workshop sessions. Overall, the programme is designed tincrease practitioners confidence in approaching clinical biomechanics'.
